Not This August?

It’s the dog days of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the place is burning up. Temperatures have crisped the old records in North America, Europe, and Asia. Huge droughts and massive blazes ravage the lands and rain either comes in floods or not at all. And then there are earthquakes in South America and the Atlantic hurricane season is starting to ramp up. Yes, the good old summertime is here.

But because it is the height of summer, August sees more than its fair share of history. August is a month of great battles and major campaigns; the traditional time for wars to erupt and end, including world wars. And this year seems particularly dangerous.

The planet is being held hostage by two doddering old men ruling huge, bloated, and utterly corrupt empires. As both Trump and Putin decline, they cling ever-more desperately to the way things were in the last century. Not that any of the problems of that era are solved — petty nationalism still dominates, weapons of mass destruction are more widespread than powerful than ever, pollution envelops land, sea, and sky in a choking grip. But new challenges, many brought about by humanity’s very success, such as rapid climate change, overpopulation, resource depletion and the very real potentials for disruption by AI and aliens, add even more uncertainty to the mix.

Combined with AI, perhaps the most dangerous development has been that of drones as weapons of war. The conflicts raging now are not your grandad’s kind of war, kids, nor your dad’s, or even your older brother’s. It’s a new game entirely. As anyone following the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East is aware, a wide variety of drones now dominate the battlefield and beyond, as the war continually escalates. In Ukraine, unmanned systems slow the Russian juggernaut, defending cities, and even strike targets far across the region, even hitting Moscow. The potential of closely coordinated drone networks is only now just being realized. It is possible that their rapid evolution might contribute to a delay of a general world war — or it may bring it about by accident or design.

Stealer of Valor, War Criminal, Coward

Because sooner more likely than later, however, that war will happen. Judging by how the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel are growing, it might not take much more to ignite.

After all, our increasingly demented president is still, in his heart, Cadet Bone Spurs, a brazen coward but also a hyper-sensitive bully, as paranoid as he is arrogant. By spinelessly sneaking off of Air Force One, hiding in a truck while leaving his staff and reporters to serve as ignorant decoys, Donald Trump has just truly demonstrated his craven nature for all the world to see. With no real understanding of military theory, much less geopolitical realities, a propensity towards mindless rage and a totally insane faith in his own brilliance, it was already too easy for that madman to push the button. But now that Trump has been revealed as a true coward, his desperate need to prove his manliness may make it almost inevitable.

Keep looking up.
